The PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers recognizes twelve emerging writers each year for their debut short story published in a literary magazine or cultural website and aims to support the launch of their careers as fiction writers.

The form of a story, regardless of length, is determined by its content and not the number of pages it takes to tell it. In order to be considered a short story, flash fiction or a poem, it must have the same elements as longer stories.

Larry Brown Short Story Award is given annually to the best short story in English written by an American citizen and published in the United States during the previous calendar year. The prize is $1,000 and publication in the Missouri Review.
This award also includes a cash prize of 3,000, along with manuscript feedback and literary agent introductions for those on the shortlist. The entry fee is 29 per novel, with sponsored places available for writers on a low income.
If you want a short story competition, this is one of the best. This annual international writing competition is open to all published and unpublished, UK and non-UK-based writers. The 1st prize for the short story award is 1,000, 2nd prize is 500, and 3rd prize is 250.
The Newfound Prose Prize is an annual prize for chapbook-length works of exceptional fiction or creative non-fiction. You can submit work in the form of a long story or essay, or a collection of short pieces (60 pages max).
Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades enter in one of the following categories: poetry (a group of three poems), fiction (a short story or one-act play), or nonfiction (a personal or academic essay). First-place winners in each category are awarded a prize of $500; second-place winners receive $250.
The Young Arts supports talented young artists between the ages of 15-18 (or grades 10-12) in ten disciplines, including writing. Applicants can submit entries in six genres: creative nonfiction, novel, play or script, poetry, short story, and spoken word. Since 1981, 820 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the arts have been supported by Young Arts.
Sarah Hall has written six novels and three short story collections. She won the BBC National Short Story Award twice, the Portico, Edge Hill and Commonwealth Prizes, and the EM Forster Award. She's been shortlisted for the Booker prize. She is Professor of Practice at the University of Cumbria.
This competition is a daring gauntlet run by the Chautauqua Institute, but the reward at the end is worth the work! A $7500 prize and one-week residency is awarded to an author of a book of original fiction or narrative nonfiction that was published this year. This is annual award given by Press 53, to the author of an outstanding and unpublished short story collection. It is open to all writers in the United States or one of its territories, regardless of publishing history. The winner will be published by Press 53 under a standard publishing contract, with a $1000 cash advance, and will also receive 50 copies of their book. If the entry conditions don't specify it, then generally you can submit the same entry to different competitions at the same time - but if your entry places in one then you should inform the organisers of the other competitions. It is then up to them whether your entry is disqualified or not.

Enter poetry and short fiction in the 5,000 international Aesthetica Creative Writing Award 2022. The winner in each category will receive 2,500 and publication in the Aesthetica Creative Writing Annual. The poetry winner will receive full membership of the Poetry Society, a twelve-month subscription to Litopia, a one-day course courtesy of the Poetry School and a five-day Arvon Course. Most of all, you need to be excited about what you write. Experience as both an entrant and a judge has demonstrated to me that unless you feel passionately about your entry, you are unlikely to enter anything with the qualities necessary to be shortlisted. If you are happy with what you might get, and not adverse to what you might give, plus you are engaged with your idea, then it is worth entering. Competitions offer the new or developing writer the opportunity for some much-coveted exposure, and they are a lot of fun to do. Your talent will grow as a result of exercising your craft, often in new and uncharted territories when responding to a theme. You might even win. 2ff7e9595c
